Chardham Yatra Delayed Due to Excess Rainfall

On Monday, Uttarakhand was drenched for the second day in a row, leading authorities to warn Chardham pilgrims not to visit the Himalayan temples until the weather improves.

Pilgrims travelling to Yamunotri should remain in Badkot and Jankichatti, while those travelling to Gangotri should stay in Harsil, Bhatwari, and Maneri, according to Uttarkashi District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit.

The yatra has been temporarily suspended for the safety of pilgrims, according to the Chardham Devasthanam Board, due to a severe rain advisory issued by the Uttarakhand meteorological department for October 17-19.

Light snowfall fell on the hills beyond Badrinath and Kedarnath, while persistent rains pounded the lower regions of Chamoli district. The rain continued to fall in Uttarkashi and Dehradun.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Amit Shah talked with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami over the phone to obtain an update on the state government’s precautionary measures in light of the heavy rain alert and promised him all possible assistance.

Dhami has requested that the district administrations give hourly weather and road status information. As a precaution, most educational institutions in Uttarakhand remained closed on Monday.
