West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee attacked Parliament and the United Progressive Alliance head-on on Wednesday, claiming that the UPA no longer exists. After meeting with Nationalist Congress Party president Sharad Pawar in Mumbai, the Trinamool Congress supremo made a major political announcement. “What is the United Progressive Alliance?” “There is no UPA today,” she said, despite her party’s already poor relationship with the Congress.

Banerjee is in Mumbai on a three-day tour to meet with Shiv Sena and NCP leaders. The TMC took some Congress officials into their fold after its resounding win in West Bengal earlier this year. In Meghalaya, 12 out of 17 Congress MLAs have switched to the TMC, making it the state’s main opposition party.
When asked if the Congress will be a part of the “strong alternative” to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Pawar said: “Whether it’s the Congress or any other party, people who are against the BJP, if they get together, they’re welcome.” Earlier in the day, Banerjee told a group of civil society activists in Mumbai that defeating the BJP would be simple if all regional parties banded together.

“In politics, constant effort is required.
