Rakesh Tikait Doesn’t Want PM to Apologize, To Maintain Image Abroad

According to Rakesh Tikait, head of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), farmers do not want Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s apology nor do they want to ruin his image abroad. His declaration comes just days after the Centre abolished three agricultural legislation that had been the target of nearly a year of protests by farmers’ unions.

“We are not looking for an apology from the Prime Minister. We don’t want to damage his international reputation. If a decision is made, it will not be made without the farmers’ approval. We work hard to nurture the crops, but Delhi has ignored our pleas “In a tweet, the BKU leader remarked (roughly translated from Hindi).

Tikait had reacted to Union agricultural minister Narendra Singh Tomar’s recent remarks about three farm regulations that had been abolished by saying that the remark was meant to confuse farmers and insult the Prime Minister. Tomar had declared at a Nagpur event: “The agriculture rules were enacted by us. It was not well received by some.

The government, on the other hand, is not dissatisfied. Farmers are the backbone of India, and strengthening that foundation will strengthen the country, so we have taken a step back and will go one step further.”

If the agricultural regulations are reintroduced by the Centre, Tikait has promised to reignite the agitation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi scrapped the three agriculture laws on November 19. These measures were voted during Parliament’s winter session, which started on November 23. Farmers who had been protesting for over a year on Delhi’s outskirts against the three laws have now called an end to their agitation and returned to their homes.
