What is Momentary Change?

Concept of the DayWhat is Momentary Change?

Date:

Momentary change, as the name suggests, means brief or short-time changes that come in a person or situation. You might have noticed the momentary change in children when you show them your angry side. For example, a child might be playing with a toy continuously without listening to you and when you grab the toy from the child, the child would immediately start crying. And when you give the child its toy back, it would again start giggling and smiling as it got its toy back. Momentary changes are often seen in the personalities of people who have a wavering mindset and are suffering from mood-related problems.

Underlying mental health issues like anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia may also bring about momentary changes in a person based on the situation and context. For example, when the daughter-in-law entered the house for the first time, her mother-in-law was very happy to have got her son married off to a well-to-do girl. However, when the daughter-in-law started living together, the mother-in-law started feeling jealous and insecure about her status in the house. So, the heated conversations that the mother-in-law had with her husband and son after her son’s marriage came out of momentary changes in her personality.

You might also notice how teenagers when scolded by their parents for being technology addicts, don’t use smartphones or laptops in their presence. But as soon as the parents go out of home for work purposes, they get back to the habit of using television or laptop, or smartphones. This is one kind of momentary change in teenagers to not reveal their real habits in front of people who don’t like them to do certain things in a particular manner.

Momentary changes can be good also as well as bad. For example, if the changes brought by a person in his personality just to suit the situation are for the good of him and others, then the momentary changes are not considered to be unhealthy. However, if the momentary changes are introduced in a person so that they can harm him at a later stage in life, then such changes are unhealthy. For example, if a person just due to peer pressure takes up the habit of smoking so that he can be a part of his friend circle, then the momentary changes he brought to live up to others’ expectations will eventually be harmful to him in future life.

Momentary changes happen in the roller-coaster journey of life as well. For example, you might have seen in the monsoon season how it is difficult for us to predict the climatic conditions. It would be raining heavily in the morning but immediately sunrays will come and the environment will get heated up. It is a momentary change wherein at one time it is fully cool and at the other moment, it is fully hot in the environment. Studying nature will help you understand the best examples of momentary changes, which are often even referred to as seasonal periods.
