Guwahati: The atmosphere has become tense due to the recovery of EVMs from a car in Assam’s Karimganj district between elections. The Election Commission has announced to vote again at a polling station in Ratabari seat here. The polling team here reached the Strong Room carrying EVMs from the car of the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, after which violence erupted in Karimganj. Ratabari seat falls in this district only. The members of the team have been dismissed by the Election Commission. Sources have given information about this.
The car in which the members of the polling team arrived with the EVM was the car of BJP candidate Krishnendu Paul of Patharkandi. Opposition parties have accused the ruling BJP of doing a scam regarding this incident.
The incident occurred when the car of the Polling Team of the Election Commission posted in Ratabari got damaged on the way. Sources said that after the voting, the team was going to the strong room with an EVM from the polling station. After the car broke down, the presiding officer called the sector officer to change the car, where he was assured to send another car.
However, instead of waiting for the car, the polling staff here took a lift in a private car. The car is registered in the election affidavit of Krishnendu Paul in the name of his wife Madhumita Paul (registration number: AS10B0022).
When this car reached the strong room area, the supporters of the opposition recognized the car and attacked it. Along with the driver, the polling staff also flew to save their lives. The district administration with the help of police here needed to control the crowd and take the vehicle, EVM and polling staff under its protection. Election Commission sources said that the polling staff involved in the incident have been dismissed. At the same time, polling station 149 has been declared a re-election.
