Muzaffarnagar (UP): Two century-old idols were taken from a Jain temple in Bheswal village under Garhioukhta police station in Shamli district, the police said on Saturday. The incident sparked resentment among the residents of the village.

A band of unidentified thieves made off with the idols of Lord Mahavir and Adinath. They entered the temple by breaking the lock of its gate on late Friday night. According to superintendent of police OP Singh, on getting information, the police rushed to the spot and spoke to the villagers about the incident.

Singh further said that efforts were on to nab culprits. In charge of the managing committee of the temple Rajiv Jain said that the stolen idols were more than 150 years old. The incident came to light in the morning on Saturday when the priest went to the temple. When he saw the broken lock at the gate, he was shocked and raised an alarm.

Immediately after that, a large number of villagers rushed to the spot and demanded immediate arrest of the thieves. They said that if the thieves were not arrested, they would launch a stir.
