Saifi village in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh turned into a sea of humanity on Tuesday. People from all walks of life gathered there to bid farewell to their “Netaji” Mulayam Singh Yadav. As the truck carrying his mortal remains was moving ahead, the mourners chanted “Netaji Amar Rahe.” The sky was overcast and it was drizzling.
Saifai (UP): The mortal remains of Dharti Putra Mulayam Singh Yadav were consigned to flames with full state honours at his native village Saifi in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday afternoon. His son and Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav lit the funeral pyre.
Saifi turned into a sea of humanity, as thousands of people reached there to attend his funeral. Former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mulayam Singh Yadav died at a private hospital in Haryana’s Gurugram. He was 82. His mortal remains were brought Saifi on Monday evening.
The sky was overcast and it was often drizzling, but that could not deter the people from reaching the Saifi mela ground where his body was kept in a hall. His brother Shivpal Yadav, son Akhilesh Yadav and other family members were on board a truck that carried the SP patriarch’s body. As the truck was moving, lakhs of people were following it, chanting “Netaji Amar Rahe.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Nationalist Congress leader Sharad Pawar and Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge were among those who paid tributes to the departed leader.
Businessman Anil Ambani, Shivpal Yadav, Congress leader Pramod Tiwari, NCP leader Supriya Sule, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary, farmers’ leader Rakesh Tikait and Aam Aadmi Party’s Sanjay Singh were present when the mortal remains of three-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh were consigned to flames. SP MP Jaya Bachchan and her son Abhishek Bachchan were also present. Yoga guru Baba Ram Dev was accompanying Akhilesh Yadav.
