Prayagraj (UP): The Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been given the last chance to comply with the court’s previous order and file a reply in connection with the Gyanvapi case.

The ASI has to file a reply (counter affidavit) in response to a petition filed by Varanasi’s Anjuman Intezamia Masjid (AIM) which manages the Gyanvapi Mosque. The next date for hearing of the case will take place on October 31.

The court has granted permission which is subject to payment of Rs 10,000 to the Legal Services Committee, Allahabad. The high court said that the amount should be deposited on or before the next date of hearing that is October 31.

Justice Padia, who was hearing the petition filed by the AIM, observed: “Today (on Tuesday), when the matter has been taken up, a request was moved on behalf of the Additional Solicitor General of India (ASGI) assisted by the counsel for the ASI to grant at least six weeks’ further time to file a counter-affidavit.” The court has, however, given ten days’ time to file an affidavit.

An attempt to steal Rs 146 crore from a Uttar Pradesh Cooperative Bank Limited in Lucknow was thwarted by an alert staff.
