A group of drunken thugs were fighting among themselves at Jaiprakash Nagar in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district. As the fight was going on outside the house of a shop owner, he tried to stop it, but the goons attacked him. When the shopkeeper’s elderly father tried to rescue him from the clutches of the thugs, one of them hit him with a stick. The man died on the spot.
Varanasi: A drunken brawl led to the murder of a 70-year-old man in Jaiprakash Nagar locality of Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district late Wednesday night, the police said on Thursday. The man, who had to pay with his life, simply intervened in the fight that was going on outside his house.
According to police commissioner A Satish Ganesh, the incident took place at 11:30pm on Wednesday when the man identified as Pashupati Singh and his son Rajendra Singh, who owns a shop in the area, came out of their house to stop a drunken fight going on between two groups of local thugs.
Nevertheless, when Rajendra intervened in the matter, toughs belonging to both the groups assaulted him. Just as Pashupati tried to rescue his son, one of the thugs hit him with a stick. The man died on the spot and his son sustained severe injuries, the police said, adding that the goons ran away from the spot. Rajendra has been admitted to a hospital. The case is under investigation.
