Lakhimpur Kheri (UP): Five people died and six sustained injuries as a sports utility vehicle (SUV) overturned and fell into a ditch on the Bhira-Palia road on Tuesday morning, the police said.
Those who lost their lives in the accident included two teachers identified as Umesh Gangwar of Rampur district and Harnam Singh who was working for a school in Himmatnagar. Two others have been identified as Raj Kishore and Vinay. Another person could not be identified, the police said.
The SUV carrying 12 people was going from Shahjahanpur to Pallia when the accident occurred, the police further said. According to Pallia Kotwali inspector Pramod Kumar Mishra, the driver lost control of the vehicle because of potholes on the road.
A report from Lucknow says that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the tragedy and directed the officials to ensure proper treatment of the injured.
