Stone-pelters paid for Kanpur violence, says SIT report

Kanpur: Those who perpetrated communal violence in Kanpur on June 3 were paid for pelting stones, says a report of the Special Investigation Team (SIT). It submitted a case diary case in the court in Wednesday. Each of the stone pelters was paid Rs 500-1,000 and each of the petrol bomb throwers was given Rs 5,000.

The report also mentioned that the stone-pelters were assured that they would be given free legal aid, if arrested. They were also imparted nine days’ training for carrying out violence. More than 60 people have so far been arrested in connection with the violence.

It was, however, not known who paid the money and from where it came. The officials remained tight-lipped about the issue. The violence broke out in Kanpur after a local organisation called for closure of market following the suspended Bharatiya Janata Party spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet. Public prosecutor Dinesh Agarwal filed the case diary.
