Man gets life term for burning wife for failing to bear son

Bulandshahr (UP): Additional district and sessions judge of the Bulandshahr district court sentenced a man to life imprisonment six years after he set his wife afire for failing to bear a son, sources in the court said on Friday. Apart from awarding life term, the court imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.

The man Manoj Bansal, a resident of Kothiyat locality, had set his wife, Anu, ablaze in front of her two daughters Latika and Tanya on June 14, 2016 and ran away. Anu was married to Manoj in 2000. Both the girls filed a petition against their father and fought the legal battle for six years. After the birth of two daughter, Manoj and his family members began to harass and torture Anu for failing to give birth to a son, advocate Sanjay Sharma said.

The girls said that their mother was rushed to Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital where she died. The family members of Manoj threatened the girls after Manoj had been booked for murder in Kotwali police station. Fed up with the threats, Latika had written a letter to former chief minister of UP, Akhilesh Yadav, who met the girls, their grandparents and maternal uncles, Sharma said.
