Devotees, servants scuffle inside Varanasi temple over Darshan

Date:

Varanasi (UP): The inner part of the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Uttar Pradesh, considered one of the holiest places on the earth, has witnessed a fight. Two devotees fought with four servants of the temple and hurled abuses at one another. The issue, as the sources in the temple management said, was related to darshan (glimpse) of the deity at the temple during evening ‘Aarati’. As the holy month of Sawan is going on thousands of devotees offer special Puja at the Kashi Vishwanath temple. Therefore, every devotee queues up for hours to have a glimpse of the deity.

There was a scuffle between two devotees and four servants of the temple, and the CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media. The footage showed that two devotees and the servants were jostling one another in a place which is supposedly the inner part of the temple.

The incident occurred on Saturday evening when ‘Aarati’ was being performed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple, sources said on Sunday. Though the doors of the temple were shut, the devotees wanted to have a glimpse of the deity. When the servants objected to it, the devotees locked horns with the servants and both sides came to blows.

Nevertheless, the devotees were taken out of the temple. After that, they shot off a letter to the temple authorities about the incident and filed a complaint at the police station against the four servants. In the complaint, they said that the servants had beaten them up.
