New Delhi: All the data in the final list of National Citizen Register (NRC) has gone offline from its official website due to non-renewal of contract with IT company Wipro. On this, the opposition Congress has called it a ‘malicious act’.
On this, the Ministry of Home Affairs says that NRC data being offline from the official website is safe, there is some technical problem in visibility on cloud. It is being resolved soon.
After the final list was published on 31 August 2019, full details of the inclusion and exclusion of the names of genuine Indian citizens were uploaded on the official website www.nrcassam.nic.in. However, this data has not been available for the last few days and it has caused panic among people, especially those excluded from the list, as their certificate of cancellation is yet to be issued to them.
When contacted, NRC state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sharma admitted that the data went offline but dismissed the allegation of having malicious intent in the meantime. He said, “The cloud service for huge amounts of data was provided by Wipro and their contract was till October last year. However, its previous coordinator did not renew.
Therefore, the data went offline from December 15 after Wipro suspended it. I took charge on 24 December. “He said that the State Coordination Committee had decided to do the necessary formalities at the 30 January meeting and wrote a letter to Wipro in the first week of February. Sharma said, “When Wipro makes the data live, it will become available to the public. We hope that people will be able to see it in two-three days. “
Reacting to the development, Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly Devavrata Saikia wrote a letter to the Registrar General of India and requested him to look into the subject immediately. He said, “… there is complete doubt that disappearance of online data is malicious act.”
