The Char Dham, which means four abodes is a set of four pilgrimage locations in India. People believe that visiting these sites will help them achieve moksha i.e. salvation from this human life. The Char Dham are Badrinath, Dwaraka, Puri, and Rameswaram. It is a belief in the Hindu religion that every person belonging to this community must visit the Char Dhams once in their lifetime at least.

In Uttarakhand, the four Dhams are referred to as Chota Char Dham, which include Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. It is believed that visiting these places will help Hindus get rid of their sins and make way to the Moksha and salvation from the cycle of birth and death in this world.

The four temple shrines are situated in the Garhwal Himalayas range of Uttarakhand. In order to start the Char Dham Yatra, people have to first visit Haridwar, which is in the plains in Uttarakhand and easily accessible to travel from road and train from different parts of the country, including New Delhi. People living in Dehradun can easily reach by road. 

Yamunotri is the first shrine of Chota Chardham and the temple is in adoration of the river Yamuna, who is the daughter of Sun God and a Hindu Goddess. It is located in the Gharwal region of the state of Uttarakhand. Gangotri is the second temple shrine devoted to Goddess Ganges. Kedarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva and it the 12th main Jyotirlinga of Shiva. Badrinath is the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu. 

Apart from these four shrines in Uttarakhand, there are 58 other temples located in the Char Dham areas. In order to visit these pilgrimage sites, it is compulsory to register on https://badrinath-kedarnath.gov.in/ and get an e-pass to start the Yatra and even enter the various temples. Yatris need to have done either (i) Both Covid 19 vaccinations or (ii) latest Negative test report of RTPCR / TrueNat / CBNAAT / RAT COVID. Proof of the same should be produced during the journey.
