Bharuch was earlier known as Broach. The city is located at the mouth of the river Narmada, which is in Gujarat. Bharuch also serves as the administrative headquarters for the district of Bharuch. King Mayur who had created the Chaudhary Dynasty was the ruler of the town of Bharuch in the 8th century. Thus, eventually, the importance of the town was noticed by the British and the Dutch who also set up their business centres in Bharuch.

Some independent nawabs could maintain their rule for 36 years and the Maratha rule for 19 years on Bharuch.
It is the Gujarati Bhargav Brahmin community which got its origin from Bharuch for ages. The community belongs to the lineage of Maharshi Bhrigu Rishi and Bhagwan Parshuram, the forms of Lord Vishnu. The Brahmin community yet takes care of the administration work of a huge number of public trusts in the city. The Bhargav Brahmins in today’s times have migrated from Bharuch to Surat, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, and even foreign countries like Australia, the US, and the UK.
Bharuch is also known as the Peanut City for having salty peanuts, which are known by the local name of Khari Sing. The city also has several MNCs such as BASF, Reliance, Videocon among others. Some of the renowned people who have their roots in Bharuch include Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi who is an activist and politician, educator and singer Omkarnath Thakur, Indian businessman Premchand Roychand, Indian politician and journalist Feroze Gandhi among others.
