Xiaomi has revealed its new concept smartphone which features a Quad Curved Waterfall Display and no ports or buttons. As the name suggests, the new concept smartphone features a curved display on all four edges of the device in a form factor that hasn’t been seen before.
Going by the images, all four edges of the device are curved around the device’s side at an angle of 88 degrees. The image also confirms the absence of ports and buttons around the body of the device. In a separate tweet, Xiaomi said that the design comprises 46′ ground-breaking patents’ that are more in number than the parts used. The smartphone focuses on innovation and brings a form factor that hasn’t been seen before.
The smartphone maker added that it achieved the quad curve 88-degree surface through “countless breakthroughs in glass bending and laminating technology to extend the limits of the display to infinity.” Notably, the 88 degree curved edges have been seen before this in devices like the Mate 30 Pro. Even the curved edges aren’t a new concept but to have all four advantages in this format, is undoubtedly different.
The smartphone reminds of Vivo’s Apex concept phone that was the first to introduce a portless design back in 2019. While the Apex curves on the left and right edges, the new Xiaomi phone offers curves at the top and bottom. Xiaomi hasn’t revealed when it will be launching this smartphone or where other parts like charging port or front camera go. There is a chance that the company might use an under-display camera and completely reply on wireless charging.
The smartphone looks very stylish, but its commercial feasibility is something to watch out for. Also, more edges as glass/display make it more prone to cracks even from simple falls. This raises concerns about the durability of the device.
