Sony has launched its flagship phone lineup for the year to introduce new camera technology to the smartphone market. Sony Xperia 1 III, Xperia 5 III, and Xperia 10 III (pronounced- Mach 3) are the three phones unveiled by the company and set to sell in select markets this summer.
Sony has not revealed the price of any of the devices yet, but it does categorize them as affordable, mid-range, and Premium variants. Out of the three, Sony Xperia 1 III will be the company’s flagship phone for 2021. The Xperia 5 III, on the other hand, will introduce some top-end features at a lower cost. The Xperia 10 III will be a mid-range smartphone.
Sony has been known for bringing the latest camera technology to its smartphones. The new Xperia devices build on the legacy through a connection with Sony’s Alpha digital cameras. The resulting camera system developed in-house now makes Sony offering “world’s first smartphone with a variable telephoto lens paired with a Dual PD sensor.” Also, the camera system is said to bring many improvements to its autofocus system and dual phase-detection system.
The highlights are featured on both Sony Xperia 1 III and Sony Xperia 5 III. Both the phones are powered by the best-in-class Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and come with 5G support. Here are some other specs that Sony offers on the phones.
Sony Xperia 1 III specifications
The flagship offering in the lineup features a 6.5-inch 4K (1644×3840 pixels) HDR OLED CinemaWide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. The collection comes with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus protection on top and promises 100 percent coverage of DCI-P3 color gamut, 240Hz motion blur reduction, and 240Hz touch sampling rate. At the back, the phone is protected by Gorilla Glass 6.
The Xperia 1 III is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC that comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB and 512GB storage options, both expandable up to 1TB via microSD card. The device runs the Android 11 operating system and comes with dual SIM support.
As for cameras, Sony Xperia 1 III is equipped with a triple rear camera setup by Zeiss optics. The primary lens is a 12-megapixel (f/1.7) primary Exmor RS for mobile sensors. Two more sensors, a 12-megapixel (f/2.3 and f/2.8) secondary Exmor RS for mobile with the variable telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel (f/2.2) wide-angle lens with a 124-degree field of view, are on the setup.
At the front, the Xperia 1 III comes with an 8-megapixel selfie camera with an f/2.0 lens. The entire setup offers features including Hybrid zoom 12.5x, AI Super-Resolution Zoom, High Dynamic Range (HDR) photo, 4K HDR Movie recording, and 120fps slow-motion.
Connectivity options on the device include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port.
The Xperia 1 III draws its juice from a 4,500mAh battery that supports Xperia Adaptive Charging, Qi Wireless charging, and a Battery Share function to power other supported devices. The phone also gets Sony’s marquee side-mounted fingerprint sensor.
Sony’s latest flagship weighs 187 grams and measures 165x71x8.2mm. It also features IPX5/ IPX8 water resistance and IP6X dust resistance. The Xperia 1 III will be available in Frosted Black, Frosted Grey, and Frosted Purple color options.
Sony Xperia 5 III specifications
The Xperia 5 III sports a slightly smaller 6.1-inch full-HD+ (1080×2520 pixels) HDR OLED CinemaWide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and 120Hz refresh rate. It is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 6 on top.
The Xperia 5 III is powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, expandable up to 1TB. It runs Android 11 and supports dual Nano-SIM.
Optics on the Sony Xperia 5 III include a triple rear camera setup with the same sensors and lenses as seen on the Xperia 1 III. The selfie camera at the front is also the same.
Its connectivity options include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. Sony Xperia 5 III comes with a 4,500mAh battery with Xperia Adaptive Charging support and a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. It weighs 169 grams and measures 157x68x8.2mm. Xperia 5 III will feature Black, Green, and Pink color shades.
Sony Xperia 10 III specifications
The third smartphone launched, Sony Xperia 10 III, features a 6-inch full-HD+ (1080×2520 pixels) HDR OLED display with a 21:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 6 top.
It is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage that is expandable up to 1TB microSD. The dual-SIM device runs Android 11 and comes with a fingerprint sensor.
For optics, the Xperia 10 III comes with a triple rear camera setup with a 12-megapixel (f/2.8) primary Exmor R for mobile sensor, an 8-megapixel (f/2.4) macro lens, and an 8-megapixel (f/2.2) ultra-wide-angle lens. Selfies are taken care of by an 8-megapixel (f/2.0) camera sensor at the front.
Connectivity options on the phone include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS/ A-GPS, NFC, and a USB Type-C port. A 4,500mAh battery backs it with 30W fast charging support. The phone weighs 169 grams and measures 154x68x8.3mm. It will be available in Black, Blue, Pink, and White colors.
Sony is yet to announce the price details of all of the devices. As for availability, the smartphones will start shipping in the summer.
