Sydney Test: Australia reach 103/2 at stumps on Day 3, lead India by 197 runs

Sydney: At the close of play, Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne were batting on 29 and 47 respectively in their second innings.

Responding to Australia’s first-innings total of 338 all out, India were dismissed for 244 to give the home side a substantial lead of 94 runs going into their second essay at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Pat Cummins was the most successful Australia bowlers, returning impressive figures of 4/29, and Josh Hazlewood ended with 2/43, while Shubman Gill and Cheteshwar Pujara scored a 50 each for the visitors.

India started playing ahead of 96 for two on Saturday, after which their innings was reduced to 244 runs. For India, young opener Shubman Gill faced 101 balls and scored 50 runs with the help of eight fours and experienced batsman Cheteshwar Pujara scored 50 runs in 176 balls with the help of five fours.

Australia had scored 338 runs in their first innings with a brilliant century from star batsman Steven Smith (131) and a half-century from Marnus Labuschen (91), in response to which India were able to score 244 runs in 100.4 overs in their first innings, giving Australia the match. A significant lead of 94 runs was achieved.

Although India were in a good position before lunch, the Indian innings faltered after lunch and the team lost the last six wickets for just 64 runs. Indian captain Ajinkya Rahane faced 70 balls and scored 22 runs with the help of a chowk and a six and he became the victim of Pat Cummins.

Apart from this, Hanuma Vihari scored only four, wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant 36, Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten 28, Ravichandran Ashwin 10, Navdeep Saini three, Jaspreet Bumrah Zero and Mohammad Siraj scored six runs.
