One of the most controversial games in World Cup history would be Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitely Stadium in Delhi in 2023. Tensions were already mounting between Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis and Bangladesh pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Charith Asalanka, and the Bangladesh bowlers before Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews was given time out in the 25th over. He was the first cricketer in history to be timed out.
Were the umpires right? What will happen if I wait too long? It was undoubtedly the right call for Shakib to file an appeal. There were several inquiries, and the dialogue seems to need to conclude. Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Towhid Hridoy, batters for Bangladesh, were not offered a handshake. The cricketers didn’t form a line to shake hands and converse after the game, as is traditional. Mathews said the Bangladeshi players showed no respect for either them or the game when asked why the Sri Lankan team didn’t shake hands with them after the game.
Matthews says, “Respect the game to be respected.” “Yeah, you need to honor the people that provide it to us. Nothing is implied; they must still abide by the regulations. We, even the officials, are ambassadors for this fantastic sport. As far as he was concerned, it was reasonable to expect nothing more from someone who shows no regard for others and fails to use their good sense.
Bangladesh advanced to the World Cup finals after eliminating Sri Lanka. Bangladesh finally broke their six-match losing skid with a three-wicket win with nine overs to go.
Shakib and Shanto produced the game-winning move despite the dew making it challenging to get a good grip on the ball. Asalanka made up for his blunder very late by catching the leading edge off Shakib’s bat, but they scored swiftly.
In his 101-ball innings, Shanto hit 12 fours before being clean-bowled by Matthews. In Bangladesh’s first game, a win against Afghanistan, Shanto scored 59 runs without being outscored; in the other six games, he scored just 28.
Even though Musfiqur Rahim was clean bowled by Madushanka in his comeback spell, Bangladesh won due to an unbeaten 15 from Towhid Hridoy, who also struck two pulled sixes.
