On January 9, Mohammed Shami and twenty-six other athletes will receive the Arjuna Award at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The nominations for the annual sports awards, which include badminton players Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty for the coveted Khel Ratna, have been formally confirmed by the Sports Ministry.

Chirag and Satwik, bronze winners from the World Championships, silver medalists from the Commonwealth Games, and gold medalists from the Asian Games, will be recognized with the awards by President Droupadi Murmu. Shami’s remarkable performance in the ODI World Cup, where he took the most wickets (24 in seven matches), also played a part in his recognition.

The Spots Ministry officially approved the nominations for the annual sports awards on Wednesday. Badminton players Satwik Sairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty were confirmed to receive the prestigious Khel Ratna Award. 26 sports figures have also received the Arjuna Award, including Mohammed Shami, a fast bowler. On January 9, President Draupadi Murmu is scheduled to present these honors at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Chirag and Satwik are proud of their accomplishments, which include winning gold at the Commonwealth Games. On the other hand, the 33-year-old Shami put on a fantastic display during the ODI World Cup, where India finished as runner-up before falling to Australia in the championship match.

With 24 wickets in seven matches, Shami became the World Cup’s top wicket-taker. Mohammed Shami, the prominent Indian cricket player, is expected to win the coveted Arjuna Award in 2023 as a result of his outstanding achievement. The seasoned bowler is the only athlete among 26 to win an award in 2023 and was a top wicket-taker in the just-finished ICC ODI World Cup 2023, taking 24 wickets in just seven innings. The Arjuna Award, which is given for exceptional performance in sports and games, is the second-highest sporting honor in India. Leading the Indian bowling attack during the team’s dominant journey to the World Cup final, Shami had an incredible year.

The 33-year-old Uttar Pradesh native is a right-arm pacer who primarily dominated one-day international cricket, taking 43 wickets in just 19 innings. He also regularly turned in strong performances in red-ball cricket. Shami was a major factor in India’s rise to the top of the ICC roofings in all three formats this season. In the meantime, 25 more athletes will be honored with the Arjuna Award for valor in 2023. India’s greatest sporting accolade, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, will be given to the country’s top badminton team, Satwik Sairaj, Rankireddy, and Chirag Shetty.

Mohammed Shami, the fast bowler, was raised by a farmer in a remote village in Uttar Pradesh. Of his four siblings, only Shami had the ability to bowl quickly, so his father sent him to a renowned coach in Moradabad, the nearest city to their village. A dynamic individual, he was renowned for his endurance and hard work, and he trained like a workhorse under Badruddin Siddique’s close supervision.
