On Thursday, Assam Minister Chief Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain during a complimentary function in Guwahati, asking the Indian star boxer to join Assam police as a DSP.
The government of Assam would provide Lovlina with monthly Rs 1 Lakh’s financial assistance until the Olympics in Paris, Biswa Sarma stated. Sarma also added that at Saupathar in the district of Assam, in the name of Lovlina Borgohain, a Rs 25 crore sports facility will be developed. Besides these awards, a road will be named after Lovlina in Assam’s most famous city, Guwahati.

The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, welcomed her warmly in Guwahati on Thursday. The state administration congratulated Borgohain, who had grabbed the worldwide weight (69kg) bronze in the afternoon. The sports minister Bimal Borah accompanied Sarma.
The 23-year-old fighter then boarded a bus featuring large cut-outs of herself and travelled to a city hotel, where she would relax before being honoured by the Assam government later in the day at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra. In the evening, Borgohain will meet with Governor Jagadish Mukhi. During her tour, she will not visit her home village of Baromukhiya in Golaghat; instead, she will travel to Delhi to attend an Independence Day event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Olympic medalists.

The 23-year-old from Assam’s Golaghat district’s Baro Mukhia hamlet became only the third Indian boxer to reach the Olympic podium, joining two of the sport’s most illustrious figures: six-time world champion M C Mary Kom and the outstanding Vijender Singh.
