India’s Star Taekwondo Player Withdraws from Paralympics

On Thursday, Aruna Tanwar of India was forced to retire from the repechage round of the Paralympics women’s taekwondo K44-49kg class due to severe injuries she received during her initial Games match even though she made it to the quarterfinals. After losing in the quarterfinals against fourth-seeded Espinoza Carranza of Peru, Aruna was set to compete in the repechage round later that evening.

In the repechage quarterfinals, Aruna was set to face Royala Fataliyeva of Azerbaijan, the 10th seed. “Probable fracture of left forearm and potential fracture of right foot,” the Indian delegation explained Aruna’s withdrawal from the repechage round. According to the withdrawal form, her decision to withdraw from the tournament was based on “serious discomfort and dysfunction owing to the aforesaid injuries,” according to the withdrawal form.

Aruna battled through an injury in the quarterfinals but was no match for her Peruvian opponent, losing 84-21. Athletes who have had a unilateral arm amputation (or comparable loss of function) or toe loss that affects their ability to raise the heel adequately are classified as K44. Espinoza didn’t let the Indian get comfortable, totally dominating the match by winning all three rounds (26-2, 30-10, and 28-9).
