Farm Bill Repeal Passed in Both Houses of the Parliament

A bill to repeal three unpopular farm rules that have sparked enormous farmer demonstrations for over a year was passed in parliament today in just two hours, without debate, making it the fastest repeal of a law in independent India. The Farm Laws Repeal Bill, 2021, was introduced at 12:06 p.m. and approved at 12:10 p.m. in the Lok Sabha. Despite strong objections from the opposing benches, the chamber adjourned in a matter of seconds. The Bill was also approved in the Rajya Sabha shortly after.

The hurried procedures were sandwiched between repeated adjournments due to interruptions on the first day of parliament’s Winter Session. The opposition had accused the administration of pushing through the three agriculture laws without any debate when they were passed in 2020. The opposition said today that the administration sought to dodge questioning about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reversal on the bills soon before the elections. “Bill has been approved without debate “On October 3, protesting farmers in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri were reportedly ran down by an SUV driven by Union Minister Ajay Mishra’s son, according to Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

The opposition alluded to Prime Minister Modi‘s remarks immediately before the session began, in which he stated that the administration was prepared to answer all questions. “Six repeal bills have been introduced in the past, but each time there has been debate. The administration does not want the opposition to speak, according to reports “According to the Lok Sabha member. After a quick back-and-forth across the chamber, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar declared in the Rajya Sabha: “There is no need to hold a debate on the Bill. Allow it to pass.”

Shashi Tharoor, a Congress politician, too expressed severe displeasure with the government’s actions. “They made a mistake. We intended to bring attention to the farmers’ demand for a law that ensures a minimum support price (MSP) and compensation for farmers killed in protests.

“This regime is opposed to debate. They have a difficulty debating “Supriya Sule, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), said as much. The Bill will now be sent to the Rajya Sabha for consideration, according to Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi. “The demand was for the agricultural legislation to be repealed. It was even supported by the opposition. They started causing havoc in the house as we were delivering the bill”.
