New Delhi: The Election Commission announced the schedule for the Gujarat assembly polls on Thursday. The elections will be held on December 1 and on December 5. The results will be declared on December 8 along with the results of Himachal Pradesh which goes to polls on November 12. In 2017 and in 2012, the Gujarat assembly elections were held in two phases as is being done this time.
In the last assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) got the lowest number of seats since 1995. Out of 182 seats, it won 99. The Congress got 77. The BJP got 49.5% of votes, and the Congress ended with 41.44%. Nevertheless, in 2017 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was not on the poll scene of the state. This time the party has emerged as a threat to the BJP as well as to the Congress.
In the last assembly polls, the contest was virtually between the Congress and the BJP. In 2012, when Narendra Modi was the Chief Minister, the BJP won 115 seats and the Congress 61.
