BSP will not keep mum over the issue, she says
Lucknow: The results of the Karnataka assembly election were coming, but most of the national TV channels were showing the civic polls in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the municipal elections in UP.
Nevertheless, a day after the results were declared, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati on Sunday alleged that the ruling party misused the government machinery to win the elections.
She said her party would not remain mum over the issue. Reacting the allegations, BJP spokesperson in UP, Harishchandra Srivastava, said that she did not accept the truth that the people had had rejected her party.
The ruling dispensation won the mayoral polls in all the 17 municipal corporations in Varanasi, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Jhansi, Bareilly, Mathura-Vrindavan, Moradabad, Saharanpur, Prayagraj, Aligarh, Sahajahanpur, Ghaziabad, Agra, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Firozabad and Meerut.
Mayawati tweeted on Sunday: The BSP is not going to sit silently over the BJP’s misuse of government machinery.
The ruling party misused the government machinery to fight the civic elections.
She said that when the time came the ruling party would face the consequences.
According to reports, the BSP fielded mayoral candidates on all the 17 seats in the state, but none of them won.
Mayawati further said, “Both the BJP and SP are adept at winning polls by misusing power. This is the reason that the ruling party often manages to secure more seats by misusing government machinery.
This was no different, she said, adding that it is a matter of concern.
At a press conference in Lucknow April 10, the BSP supremo sought ballot papers in the elections to mayors and corporations.
Srivastava, however, said that Mayawati’s tweets indicated her frustration.
Since the people rejected BSP, Mayawati said the BJP had won the elections by misusing government machinery.
She is shying away from the truth, he said.
The BJP won 14 out of 16 mayoral seats in 2017 municipal elections in UP.
