Date:

New Delhi: The process to elect the President of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) may begin this month, party sources said on Saturday. The post has fallen vacant after Congress’ Member of Parliament from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi quit as the party president after the general elections of 2019. As there are no clear indications from Rahul Gandhi, the party is contemplating other names.

Sources further said that Rahul Gandhi will hold meetings with the state units and visit every district across the country before the general elections in 2014. The plan has not been finalised. The name of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot is also doing rounds for the party’s presidentship, but he does not intend to leave Rajasthan.  Rahul Gandhi has, however, said that the Congress president should be someone who is not from the Gandhi family. The leaders close to him have tried to convince him to re-assume the charge, but he has been reluctant. A senior Congress leader said that Rahul Gandhi should take over as party president. Meanwhile, the Congress Working Committee has given go-ahead to hold the internal elections of the party.
