New Delhi: In-charge of the Congress’ communication cell and general secretary of the party, Jairam Ramesh, has appealed to the party spokespersons to keep away from commenting on the candidates contesting the ensuing election of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC), party sources said on Friday. The directive was issue after party spokesperson Gaurav Vallabh openly supported the candidature of Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot for the post.
In a message to party spokespersons, media coordinators and office-holders of the communication department, Ramesh said, “We all have our individual preferences but our job is to highlight only the following.”
The Congress is the only party where elections are held to elect the party and that is to be highlighted, Ramesh said, adding that the spokespersons should ensure that elections are seen to free and fair. He said that the spokespersons should also highlight the Bharat Jodo Yatra which is getting tremendous response from public.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh announced that he would not contest the party’s presidential election, but he would continue to work for the party. Congress leader said that the post of the president of the Indian National Congress is an ideological post which represents a set of ideas and belief system and vision of India.
After Digvijaya Singh’s announcement not to contest the presidential poll, now the fight for the top job in the Congress is between Ashok Gelhot and Shashi Tharoor.
