Political Desk – The Congress has suffered a major setback in Assam ahead of the Assembly elections, after former state unit chief Bhupen Kumar Borah submitted his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
Borah later confirmed his resignation to the media. However, he said he would reveal the reasons behind his decision “at the right time.”
News agency PTI, quoting sources, reported that Borah mentioned in his resignation letter that he was being ignored by the party leadership and was not getting the respect or role he deserved in the Assam Congress.
Himanta Biswa Sarma Reacts
After the news of Borah’s resignation spread, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reacted strongly. He called Borah the “last Hindu leader in the Assam Congress” and said he would visit Borah’s house on Tuesday evening.
Sarma also claimed that the Congress in Assam was weakening fast and that more leaders would soon join his side.
He further said that since he accused current Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi of having links to Pakistan, many grassroots Hindu Congress leaders have started leaving the party.
Sarma also predicted that around five more MLAs may switch sides in the next two weeks.
Congress Leaders Try to Stop Him
Soon after Borah’s resignation news came out, many opposition leaders reached his home in Guwahati.
Congress leaders including Gaurav Gogoi, Bhanwar Jitendra Singh, Pradyut Bordoloi, and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi were seen at Borah’s residence, trying to convince him to stay in the party.
Borah told reporters that he had sent his resignation by email at 8 am, and he had explained everything clearly in the letter.
He said:
“I don’t hide anything. I will speak openly at an appropriate time.”
Borah Says It’s Not Personal
Borah also clarified that he has not resigned because of any one person or for personal reasons.
He said he has served Congress for 32 years, and his decision is linked to his concern about the future of the party in Assam.
Bhupen Borah was the Assam Congress president from 2021 to 2025. He was replaced last year by Gaurav Gogoi.
The disagreement inside the party reportedly began after this leadership change.
Many in the party believed Borah had strengthened Congress at the grassroots after two straight Assembly defeats. But the high command felt the party needed a bigger face like Gogoi to take on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Now, Borah’s resignation has created fresh tension in the party at a crucial time, just months before the Assam Assembly elections.
