Uttarakhand government receives draft report from Uniform Civil Code committee

NewsUttarakhand government receives draft report from Uniform Civil Code committee

Date:

Over the weekend, a committee in Dehradun presented the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

At a ceremony at Mukhya Sevak Sadan, a panel led by former Supreme Court member Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai submitted the UCC draft to Dhami. Authorities increased their presence outside of Dhami’s official residence in the hours before the draft’s submission.

Following Saturday’s cabinet meeting, the state administration will officially approve the UCC draft. As a bill, the House is anticipated to examine the text on February 6. To become the first Indian state to do so after independence, Uttarakhand would have to pass the UCC.

For the people of the state, it is a “significant day” according to Dhami’s tweet, as the UCC will help bring about Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat.

In Dehradun, the UCC implementation committee is expected to deliver its draft presentation at 11 a.m. today. “After reviewing it, we will bring a bill to implement the UCC in the state in the upcoming assembly session,” Dhami tweeted in Hindi on Friday evening.

On this historic day, every resident of the state may take pride. After the success of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat, he projected that the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take the nation to even greater heights of prosperity.

Justice Desai then appointed a five-member committee in May 2022 to start the UCC’s drafting process. The UCC drafting team, which also comprises Manu Gaur, a social activist, Shatrughan Singh, a former chief secretary of Uttarakhand, and Pramod Kohli, a retired judicial, has got a total of four extensions, the most recent being a fifteen-day extension in January of this year.

No matter one’s religious affiliation, the UCC will serve as a bedrock for uniform regulations governing marriage, dissolution of marriage, land, property, and inheritance.

In the 2022 assembly votes, the saffron party fulfilled a big promise it made to the state’s voters before the election by sweeping to power for the second consecutive term. Until the year 2000, no political party has ever been able to bring about the creation of a state. Legislation regarding the UCC is something the BJP has pledged to do.

The decision to establish a committee to draft the UCC was made by the Dhami government in March 2022, at the first state Cabinet meeting after the BJP victory.

The committee has been studying the relevant laws that control the personal civil concerns of Uttarakhandi people, including laws regarding marriage, divorce, property rights, succession/inheritance, adoption, maintenance, custody, and guardianship, in order to create and suggest amendments to existing laws on the topic.

In the same way, this vow was also fulfilled during the consecration of the Ram temple. Let me conclude by expressing my deepest appreciation to Prime Minister Modi. “The people of this country have been waiting for this report for a long time, and finally work has started on UCC,” Dhami observed upon receiving the research.
