Maharashtra Power Minister Nitin Raut has said that at least 12 states are facing power problem due to shortage of coal in Maharashtra.

NewDelhi: Severe power cuts and power crisis are looming large on the citizens in this scorching summer in many parts of the country. At least 12 states are facing a power problem due to the coal shortage in Maharashtra. Maharashtra Power Minister Nitin Raut informed on Tuesday. Raut also said that his department is working to bridge the gap with micro-level planning.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Nitin Raut said that due to this micro-level planning, there has been no load-shedding in Maharashtra in the last five to six days and the level of power shortage remains at 15 percent.

He informed that Maharashtra government-owned Mahagenco has set a target of generating 8000 MW of electricity. Thermal power plants located in the coastal areas of Maharashtra run on coal imported from abroad and the central government recently lifted the ban on the import of coal from abroad.

Raut further said, “The state government has floated tenders for import of one lakh metric tonnes of coal. The hortage of coal is also due to the shortage of rakes (trains). We require 37 rakes daily, whereas we only need 26. Each rake can transport 4,000 metric tonnes of coal."

Nitin Raut also met Chhattisgarh CM to solve the coal crisis

Nitin Raut also met Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Monday regarding the coal crisis in Maharashtra and discussed giving necessary approvals for the coal block allotted to Maharashtra. Keeping in mind the energy needs of Maharashtra, Chief Minister Baghel has assured to give approval soon as per rules of Gare Pelma Sector-2 coal block.

Gare Pelma Coal Block in Raigad District of Chhattisgarh is allotted to Gare Pelma Sector-2, Maharashtra Electricity Company (Mahagenco). For power generation in Maharashtra, coal is to be supplied from this coal block, so that the supply of coal is maintained in the coming times. The majority of power plants in India are coal-based plants that need coke and coal for electricity generation but due the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war the prices has skyrocketed amid supply disruptions across the world.
