Amit Shah Arrives at Srinagar

Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, arrived in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday for a three-day visit, his first since the government repealed Article 370 two years ago. The home minister began his journey by visiting the late Inspector Parvez Ahmed, who was assassinated by terrorists last month. His wife received paperwork linked to a government position from him. Shah was joined by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Union Minister Jitendra Singh, and DGP Dilbag Singh during his visit.

According to sources, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and other top officials from the Jammu and Kashmir administration met him at the Srinagar airport. The arrival of Shah comes amid a wave of civilian deaths in the Valley. According to sources, he will preside over a security unified command conference at the Raj Bhawan. The four corps commanders, J&K police top brass, intelligence agency and central armed police forces leaders, and other essential officials will attend the conference.

“He is expected to pay a visit to the families of Makhan Lal Bindroo, a Sikh teacher, and a Muslim civilian, all of whom were recently slain by terrorists,” a Jammu and Kashmir government source said. More notably, Shah is expected to respect the 40 CRPF martyrs murdered in a terror assault in February 2019 in Lethpora, Pulwama district, South Kashmir. At Lethpora, a suicide bomber drove a bomb-laden car close to a CRPF convoy to Srinagar from Jammu and blew it up, killing 40 jawans. Following the incident, India launched air attacks on Pakistan’s Balakot.

On Sunday, Shah will go to Jammu, where he will likely speak at an IIT conference in the morning and a public gathering in the afternoon. Before returning to Srinagar, he is expected to meet with a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits. Militants have killed 11 people in the Valley in the last two weeks, including migrants and non-Muslim Kashmiris. While security forces have killed 17 suspected terrorists and increased security around the Valley during this time, insiders say the network is still at large, and security personnel is at a loss for what to do to guarantee the minister’s visit goes off without a hitch.
