NewDelhi: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani gets bail from Assam’s Kokrajhar court. The MLA was arrested abruptly last week. A case was registered against Mevani for tweeting against PM Modi. A court in Kokrajhar on Sunday remanded Jignesh Mewani, an independent MLA from Gujarat, in judicial custody for one day. Assam police on Wednesday arrested Mewani from Gujarat for tweeting against the Prime Minister. He was then in police custody for three days.
Vadgam MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani was arrested by Assam Police from Palanpur Circuit House in Banaskantha district around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. He was arrested following a tweet on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He tweeted that PM Modi, who considers Godse as God, has been on a tour of Gujarat since the 20th, and he should appeal for peace and tranquility in the wake of communal riots in Khambhat, Veraval and Himmatnagar in Gujarat. In another tweet, Mewani also slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Jignesh Mewani has been charged under Section 120B (Criminal Conspiracy), Section 153A (Promoting animosity between the two communities), 295A, 504 (Intentional insult with intent to incite a breach of peace) and the IT Act.
He was arrested following a complaint
The complaint of Arupkumar Dey of Bhabanipur Kokrajar, Assam states that Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mewani made an offensive tweet on social media platform Twitter. In which it was written that the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi worships ‘Godse’ and respects his own God. During his visit to Gujarat on April 20, PM Modi should publicly appeal to the people for peace and unity in the wake of the communal riots in Himmatnagar, Khambhat, Gujarat.

The Assam Congress, which has been protesting since Mewani’s arrest, says she has been arrested for trying to thwart Mewani’s influence in Gujarat. Besides, Assam CM Hemant Biswa Sarma claimed, “I don’t even know who Jignesh Mewani is.”
