The former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and head of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has criticised withdrawal of bank notes of Rs 2,000 from circulation by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
She said on Sunday that it would have a direct impact on the people. According to her, such a decision should have been taken after weighing the pros and cons of its impact on the market.
The RBI said that the currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination would remain a legal tender and could be changed by September 30.
In a tweet in Hindi, Mayawati said that such frequent changes in currency notes were related to the nation’s honour and had a direct impact on the market.
Therefore, the RBI should have plugged away at the problem before withdrawing such banknotes from circulation, she said.
According to the RBI, exchange of currency notes of Rs 2,000 denomination can be done up to an extent of Rs 20,000 at one go at any bank beginning from May 23 this year.
At the same time, the apex bank advised all the banks not to issue fresh currency notes worth Rs 2,000.
