Belagavi (Karnataka): A band of thieves tried to play a prank on the residents in Gokak town of Karnataka’s Belagavi district, but they never knew that their mischief would spawn religious sentiments.

What the burglars did was that after stealing the solar lights, they put cow skulls on the poles. Nevertheless, instead of generating sniggers among the residents, it led to public outrage. Locals said that the skulls had been dangling from the poles for three days but the district administration did not take any action.

The burglars targeted the solar poles installed beside the road between the town and the famous Gokak Falls, called the Niagara Falls of India. They stole solar lights from three poles. Gokak town police have been intimated about the incident and corporation authorities are also visiting the spot, according to sources. A resident said that it was not known whether the thieves did that to whip up religious passion or played a prank on the people. Anyway, the incident generated sniggers among some residents and anger among a few.
