SC grants one more month to govt for giving permanent commission to women army officers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court gave the Center another month to implement its decision to give permanent commissions to all serving SSC women officers in the army. A hearing was held in the Supreme Court today regarding permanent commissioning of women in the Indian Army and their deployment in command posts.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud said that the Center has to follow all the directions given in the court’s decision. The court’s directive came on an application filed by the Center seeking six months’ time to implement the verdict citing the corona virus epidemic. The Center told the bench that the decision on the issue is in the final stages and only formal orders are yet to be issued. The Center said that the court’s decision will be complied with in letter and spirit.

Significantly, on February 17, the Supreme Court, in an important decision, asked all the women officers who want to opt for this option within three months in the army. During this period, the Center had cited physical capabilities and social norms behind not giving women command posts.
