Tehri (Uttarakhand): The floating huts are polluting the holy Bhagirathi by discharging tones of refuse into it. The company, which operates those huts, is hand in glove with the officials of various government departments, so action is barely taken against it. As the administration is keeping mum, those who operate the floating huts have been given a free hand to polluted the holy river.

Environmentalists have raised their voice against the company, but that fell on deaf ears. An inquiry conducted by an officer highlighted many flaws in the way the floating huts are operating, but the administration, instead of restricting the company, has allowed it to function.

Surprisingly, the Pollution Control Board (PCB), after 24 days of checking the floating huts, allowed it to discharge the dirt in the Tehri Lake. The PCB should have taken a strict action against the operator of the floating huts.

Now, the district administration has distanced itself from the issue.

According to official sources, the Tourism Development Council has given permission to operate the floating huts. Le Roi Company sought permission to operate floating boats in Tehri Lake under private-public partnership mode. Therefore, it was the responsibility of the Le Roi Company to take steps to keep the river and the lake pollution-free. The company’s failure to do its duty caused pollution to the river and the lake. An employee of the company posted a video clip on social media showing the floating huts releasing dirt into the Tehri Lake. The video clip went viral on social media. Consequently, on October 7, the district administration of Tehri and a team of PCB officials inspected the floating huts.

During the inspection, the team members saw untreated sewage water and kitchen waste coming out of the floating huts and falling into the lake. Immediately after getting the inquiry report, the administration sealed the kitchens of the floating huts. But director (infrastructure) of the Tourism Development Council Lieutenant Commander Deepak Khanduri sent a letter to the district administration instructing them to allow the floating huts to operate again. The letter also told the administration to take clearance for operating the floating huts.

District magistrate of Tehri Saurabh Gaharwar said that the floating huts had been inspected and the kitchens sealed for lack of a system to release treated waste water into the lake. But after the order of the Tourism Development Council, permission has been given to the company to operate the floating huts. The PCB, however, maintains a stoic silence over the issue. The Tehri Lake has been constructed over the the Bhagirathi that originates in Gomukh. The Bhagirathi assumes the form and name of the Ganga from Devprayag. The floating huts, which are polluting the lake and the river in the name of promoting tourism, are not even registered with the tourism department.
