NationalMeghalaya Sex Racket: BJP leader’s cop custody extended

Date:

Shillong: Vice-president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Meghalaya unit Bernard N Marak was arrested from Uttar Pradesh on July 28 for running a sex racket in his farmhouse in Meghalaya. His police custody was extended by six more days, sources said on Saturday.  The police said that more charges related to running the sex racket were levelled against Marak, an elected leader of Garo Hills Autonomous Council. During a search of his farmhouse, the police recovered arms and explosives. Although the BJP is criticising the Congress for launching a protest against grilling of its interim president Sonia Gandhi and party MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi by the Enforcement Directorate, in Meghalaya the BJP workers have launched a protest against his arrest seeking a fair probe. While the BJP waited for nearly seven years to order ED probe into Herald case, its workers said that the sex racket in Meghalaya which their leader was allegedly running had been operational since 2019.

A BJP leader said that the move was intended to malign Marak. Reacting to the demand for an independent probe into the sex racket, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that there would not be any independent probe into the case.
