Kolkata: A man has strangled his new-born daughter to death in a village in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, the police said on Wednesday. The reason for such a savage act was that the baby girl was the third female child in a row, besides she had a dark complexion. Immediately after the incident, some locals bashed up the culprit, Rohul Amin Islam, a small-time contractor, for murdering the newly born. They also handed him over to the police.
The local people told the police that the mother of the new-born, Rehana Begum, was subjected to mental and physical torture by her husband for quite some time after she gave birth to two girls. Meanwhile, Rehana became pregnant for the third time. Rehana informed the police that she was tensed since late Monday evening after she gave birth to her third girl child. She was keeping the new-born under close watch ever since her birth.

However, early on Wednesday morning, when she went to the washroom, her husband strangled the new-born to death. The event was kept under cover for a few hours until some local health workers reached the residence of Amin to enquire about the health conditions of the new-born and noticed the dead baby. Then the health workers informed locals who beat up Islam and called the police to the spot.
