Former Union Minister Buta Singh dies, Modi and Rahul condoles

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Sardar Buta Singh died here on Saturday. He was 86 years old. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Born on March 21, 1934 in Mustafapur village of Jalandhar district in Punjab, Mr. Singh was associated with journalism before joining politics. He won the first election from the Akali Dal and later joined the Congress.

Mr. Singh had won the Lok Sabha election eight times. As Union Minister, he held the responsibility of the Governor of Bihar along with Home, Agriculture, Railways and Communications and other important ministries. He was also the Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes from 2007 to 2010 during the tenure of Dr. Manmohan Singh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former Congress President Rahul Gandhi have deeply mourned the death of former Union Minister Sardar Buta Singh.

Mr. Modi tweeted, “Sardar Buta Singh Ji was an experienced administrator as well as an effective voice for the welfare of the poor and the weak. His death was very sad. My condolences to his family and supporters. “

Rahul Gandhi said, “With the death of Sardar Buta Singh Ji, the country has lost a true public servant and a loyal leader. He devoted his entire life for the service of the country and the well being of the people, for which he will always be remembered. My condolences to his family members during this difficult time. “
