New Delhi: Chief Justice of India UU Lalit who is set to retire on November 8 has recommended the second-most senior judge of the Supreme Court Justice DY Chandrachud as his successor, sources said on Tuesday. Chief Justice Lalit handed over the letter to Justice Chandrachud at a gathering of SC judges.

Once the government accepts, Just Chandrachud will be the 50th Chief Justice of India and take oath on November 9. CJI Lalit has a short tenure in office less than three months. Justice Chandrachud will have a longer period in office for two years. He will retire on November 10, 2024. Justice Chandrachud, who graduated from Delhi University, got LLM degree and doctorate in juridical sciences from the Harvard Law School, US. He practised law at the Supreme Court and at the Bombay High Court. The Bombay High Court designated him as senior lawyer in June 1998.

The son of former Chief Justice of India, YV Chandrachud, DY Chandrachud also served as the additional solicitor general from 1998 until he was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court on March 29, 2000. He also served as the director of Maharashtra Judicial Academy.

He was appointed as the chief justice of the Allahabad High Court on October 31, 2013 and, on May 13, 2016, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court.
