NationalCEA waits for CWC nod to start Congress chief poll process

Date:

New Delhi: The Central Election Authority has completed the voters’ list. Now, it is waiting for the Congress Working Committee’s (CWC) green signal for conducting the party’s presidential poll, sources said on Saturday.  Majority of the party leaders feel that Wayanad Member of Parliament and party’s former president Rahul Gandhi should take over as the president of the All-India Congress Committee (AICC). Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has made it clear that he is not a contender for the party’s top job. He also said that only a member of the Gandhi family could keep the Congress together.

The Congress may think about continuing Sonia Gandhi as party president and appoint a working president for each zone. The idea was mooted a few months back. The process for electing the party president was to begin from August 21. Nevertheless, the CWC meeting has not yet been called.
