New Delhi: A former bureaucrat Arun Goel took over as Election Commissioner of India on Monday. He was appointed on November 19. After the retirement of chief election commissioner Sushil Chandra in May, the post has been lying vacant.
Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju notified the appointment made by President Droupadi Murmu. Rijiju said, “The President is pleased to appoint Arun Goel, IAS (retd.) (PB:1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes the office.”
The former Punjab-cadre IAS officer was working as the secretary of Heavy Industries till Friday. He took voluntary retirement from the post on that day. He also served as the secretary to the culture ministry and vice-chairman of Delhi Development Authority. He will join Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar and Anup Chandra Pandey on the pool panel. He is in line for the post of the next CEC. Tenure of the incumbent CEC will expire in February 2025.
