Things you need to know about Sabarimala Temple

The Sabarimala temple is located in the Pathanamthitta district of the state of Kerala. The temple has reopened from today on the occasion of the two-month-long Mandala Kalam and Makaravillakku festival. The temple is located on the hilltop and is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. The temple will open for the 41-day Mandala puja festival which will end on 26 December this year. Then again, the temple will reopen on 30 December and darshan for devotees will be permitted till 20th January 2021 for the Makaravilakku festival.

Kerala state health minister has mentioned that the officials have ensured to make detailed arrangements for pilgrims so that the spread of the COVID-19 can be avoided. The officials have also insisted that people have to show either a full vaccination certificate or a negative RT-PCR test report that is not older than 72 hours if they wish to visit the temple. All devotees will also to have show their Aadhaar cards and the security of the temple will be tightened during the Mandala-Makaravilakku festival.

Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is the full name of the temple which is the most important and renowned among all the Sastha temples in Kerala. The temple is located about 3000 feet above sea level and is open to people who belong to all religions. 

There is a place near to the temple; east of Sannidhanam (the residence of Lord Ayyappa), dedicated to Vavar (a close friend of Lord Ayyappa) which is called Vavaru Nada, an embodiment of religious harmony. Another specialty of this temple is that it does not remain open throughout the year and it is open for devotees to visit the temple only during the days of Mandalapooja, Makaravilakku, Vishu, and also during the first day of each Malayalam month. It is believed that the pilgrims have to observe celibacy for 41 days before visiting the Sabarimala temple.
