Mathura is a beautiful city that is located in the state of Uttar Pradesh. As Krishna Janmashtami is tomorrow, let us know more about the wonderful city where Lord Krishna was born. Approx above 4 lakh people live in this city as per the 2011 Census of India. 

Mathura is said to be located at the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex and is one among the seven holy cities called Sapta Puri. The Kesava Deo Temple was constructed in olden times on the location of Krishna’s birthplace which was an underground prison.

Mathura was the capital of Surasena kingdom that was ruled by Kansa who is the maternal uncle of Lord Krishna. In the pre-COVID times, the festival of Krishna Janmashtami was grandly observed in Mathura each and every year. Mathura has been selected as one of the heritage cities for the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana scheme of the Government of India.

The land of Lord Krishna Mathura’s twin city is Vrindavan. Mathura is the auspicious city that is said to be the heart of Brij Bhoomi. There are different locations of historic and religious importance that are situated in Mathura and its neighboring towns. Inside the Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex has the Keshav Deva temple, Garbha Griha shrine, Bhagavata Bhavan, and the Rangabhoomi. For the unaware, Rangabhoomi is the place where the final battle between Kans and Lord Krishna took place.

One of the largest temples that are famous in Mathura is the Dwarkadheesh Temple. It has the Vishram Ghat at the bank of river Yamuna which is known to be the place where Lord Krishna had taken rest after killing Kans. Other prominent Hindu religious sites and heritage locations are the Gita Mandir, Govind Dev temple, Iskcon Temple, Kusum Sarovar, Yum Yamuna Temple, and Peepleshwar Mahadeo Temple.
