Sustainable Mountain Tourism to be observed as a theme on International Mountain Day

Bhopal, 11 December: In order to create awareness about mountain communities all over the world, this year International Mountain Day is celebrated on 11 December. The theme of the International Mountain Day program is Sustainable Mountain Tourism. There is sustainable tourism in mountains that can lead to making extra and alternative livelihood options. It can also support reducing poverty levels, promote social inclusion and also lead to landscape and biodiversity conservation.

According to mountaineer Ratnesh Pandey who became the first person from Madhya Pradesh to recite Indian National Anthem at Mount Everest, mountain conservation is a vital thing required for the long-term development of nature and this day is observed to make people aware of the day’s importance. Sadly, in today’s times, mountains are under threat due to climate change and a decline in mountain manners. Therefore, it is important for people and even young trekkers to understand the importance of mountains. International Mountain Day is a wonderful day to spread awareness about mountain and biodiversity conservation.

Mountaineer Bhawna Dehariya Mishra is one of the first women from Madhya Pradesh to climb Mount Everest. She opines that spreading knowledge and awareness about the mountains is quite vital to make people understand the opportunities and limitations in mountain development. Also, it is a way to emphasize the effectiveness of mountains.
