Christmas is just a few weeks away and one has the enthusiasm to celebrate this festival with grand pomp and fervor. It is not simply about wearing red clothes or decorating a Christmas tree when it comes to celebrating the year’s last festival every year. It is about knowing the traditions related to the festival that is practiced every year by people all over the world. Here is a list of some amazing Christmas traditions in India that you may want to know insights into.

1) Fasting:

One of the important aspects of Christmas among the Christians in South West of India i.e. in Kerala is that they fast for the whole month with respect to the festival. The community doesn’t eat food from 1st to 24th of the month of December. They believe that it is one of the ways to devote their whole meals to the Almighty until the Christmas eve prayer.

2) Christmas Cribs:

If you want to know how Jesus was born, you will need to see Christmas Cribs. Because it is the representation of how Jesus was born in the form of figures and statues. Usually, people make the figures with clay, ceramic, and sand and place them outside homes and churches. People in Goa make these cribs with beautification in order to represent the scene in Manger or Native.

3) Couples kissing under a Mistletoe tree:

It is believed that Mistletoe is a tree that brings love and prosperity in life. Thus, the Christians in India and many places all over the world hang a Mistletoe inside their homes to invite good fortune. They believe that the couples who kiss under the Mistletoe tree will have more love and affection towards each other. Mistletoe is also considered a symbol of fertility.

4) Lamps and lights:

If you have ever visited Southern India during Christmas, you will find how people celebrate the festival by lighting up their homes. Christians usually place a small burning clay lamp on their floor to show that Jesus is present to give light to the world. In Goa, people usually hang beautiful star-shaped lanterns on the roads. It is believed that people who walk on these paths will have an illuminated life.

5) Christmas Carols:

If you have seen the celebrations of Christmas, you would have surely known about Christmas Carols. The songs that mark the birth of Jesus Christ are something that everyone cherishes. People in different parts of the country sing carols with their loved ones sometimes the whole night too. The more one sings the carols, the merrier their life becomes.

6) Midnight Mass:

Midnight Mass is one of the most important ways to celebrate Christmas. Catholics along with their family members go to Churches to observe the holy event. People come in masses to worship Jesus Christ and also give presents to each other and then they enjoy a huge feast wherein they are served different types of dishes.
