Karadaiyan Nombu is a Tamil festival celebrated all over India on 14 March 2020. The auspicious time to tie the sacred yellow thread this year is between 10.45AM to 12 PM.
The festival marks the celebration of the famous belief that Savitri got her husband back from Yama (death) on this day.
The festival is also called as Karadayan Nonbu or Savitri Vratham.
On this day, married and unmarried women prepare a special ada made out of rice flour, black eyed peas, jaggery and coconut. It is offered to Goddess Gowri as a Prasad. Then a puja is performed after which women tie the yellow thread called as manjal saradu or nonbu charadu thinking and praying that their husbands should live longer.
Married women celebrate the festival for the well-being of their husbands while unmarried women observe the festival to get a good life partner in future.
Women take inspiration from Savitri’s devotion and belief in Goddess Gowri’s power that helped her win back her husband’s life from the Lord of death, Yama.
