Sugar cravings are something that comes to anyone and everyone, be it of any age group. Sugar cravings are not good for people who already have existing illnesses like diabetes, obesity, and a high risk of developing sugar-related illnesses. Sugar cravings are easy to manage if you have the strong determination to get rid of eating a lot of sweets and sugary foods. Here we list some ways how I got rid of my habit of hopping to sugar eating.

1) Sugar can be avoided if it is replaced with the next best something that you like the most. For example, I liked gur or jaggery the most after sugar. So, whenever I got a craving to eat a cake or sweet items, I would make something with jaggeries like rice sheera with jaggery, and Rava laddoo with jaggery, among others. You can even reduce the intake of sugar eventually if you know how to replace it with healthy items that you would prefer the most.

India’s sugar exports grow by 291% since FY 14, to touch $4.6 billion

2) Walk or exercise depending on how much sugar intake you have. For example, if you are putting two spoons of sugar in your morning tea, you can simply decide to walk for a half-hour per day as compensation for the sugar intake. In case you have eaten up a lot of sugary items during the festival season or during travel periods, you can simply decide to work out to reduce the impact of sugar on your body.

3) Remember it is all in the mind. If you decide in your mind that you will not include excess sugar in your diet just because your mouth craves it, you can surely get rid of the habit. You can decide to keep a journal in which you can write down the days you ate less sugar or no sugar at all. At the end of the month, you can count the number of days and give yourself ratings for your own performance. The month wherein you ensured to eat less sugary items and had more number of such days, you can give yourself a gift for performing well.

4) You can consult a good nutritionist who can give you weekly and monthly goals to achieve in your diet and maintain your weight. For example, if you are someone who wants external party support to keep reminding you and checking your progress towards healthy habits development, you can surely get in touch with a good nutritionist who can help you do the same.

5) Distract yourself from sugar-eating or stress-eating. It is believed that people tend to eat a lot of sugar or sweets made from sugar because they are under stress. Stress is a mental health condition in which a person is unable to accept reality as it is. It makes people wonder what or why things are the way they are, which keeps them always under tension or stress. So, either you can find out interesting ways to keep yourself distracted from the stress issues, or whenever you get the craving to eat sugar, you can simply do your hobby like painting or jogging or swimming or listening to music. This will keep you away from the sugar cravings at least for a temporary period.
