Officials stated that at least three workers died and more than 70 were severely injured while working on the Expo 2020 site in Dubai. The organisers initially stated that five employees had been murdered but subsequently issued a statement calling the prior count an “error.” The figures were revealed after the European Parliament slammed the UAE’s human rights record and “inhumane” treatment of migrant workers, calling for a boycott of the six-month-long international fair.

“Unfortunately, there have been three work-related fatalities and 72 significant injuries to date,” according to an Expo statement, which also stated that worker safety was its “top concern.” “We have created world-class rules, standards, and processes that safeguard and support everyone participating in Expo 2020 Dubai’s health, safety, and well-being,” the statement added.
According to an AFP report, over 2,00,000 people were involved in building the massive complex on the outskirts of Dubai. It went on to say that the facility had completed 247 million labour hours and that the number of accidents was lower than in the United Kingdom. On a showground twice the size of Monaco, there are hundreds of pavilions and other amenities.

Human rights groups have slammed the event to treat low-wage migrant workers from Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, who keep the UAE’s economy thriving.
